Holiday Musical

Book by Walton Jones. Based on an idea by Walton Jones and Carol Lees. Music by various composers.

A different time is evoked in this marvelously theatrical and winning show, a live broadcast of a The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet player  man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

Holiday Insanity & Humor

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer was created for Montgomery Ward department stores. True

Decking the Halls: Evergreens are symbolic of enduring and renewed life, which is why decorate our homes with them at Christmastime. The fetching in of green branches is a magical rite to ensure the return of vegetation at winter's end. Our modern day Christmas tree is the centerpiece of this belief.

Care should be taken as to which sort of holly is brought into the house for Christmas, because who wears the pants in that home in the upcoming year will depend on that. Prickly holly indicates the man will hold sway, but the smooth sort guarantees the wife will reign. Prudent couples take care to bring both kinds in together to assure a balanced and harmonious home.

In Canada, Santa's postal code is HOH OHO. True

The first formal Christmas Card was designed by and Englishman, J.C. Horsley in 1843. It was lithographed on stiff, dark cardboard and depicted in color a party of grownups and children with glasses of wine raised in a toast over the words "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you." One thousand were printed, and one sent to James Peters family in London, and still survives. According to Hallmark Cards, the all-time favorite sentiment on a Christmas card is "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You!" Apparently, the first is still the best.
