PLAN YOUR VISIT
|
Dahlonega's visitors can explore the
outdoors and the winding mountain
roads by hiking, bicycling, or
horseback riding through some of the
most beautiful and challenging
terrain in Georgia.
After a day of taking in the
incredible scenery of the mountains
and forest, visitors can then return
to their accommodations in Dahlonega
to enjoy evening hors d'oeuvres and
a glass of Georgia-made wine (there
are four world-class wineries in
Lumpkin County alone!), enjoy
luxurious treatments at any one of
the area's spas or health centers,
or simply take a spring stroll among
the town's especially charming
historic streets.
The Dahlonega Commercial District,
fanning out from the museum in a
series of squares and historic
buildings, is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Dahlonega offers a wonderful
diversity of un-crowded shopping
opportunities with a litany of
elegant shops, intimate boutiques,
antique stores, and one-of-a-kind
galleries offering local wines,
distinctive gifts, clothing, and
regional arts and crafts. Most of
the shops are on or near the Gold
Museum, so visitors can park once
and shop all over town.

Oldest Courthouse In Georgia |
|
|
Dahlonega 1836 Courthouse |
|
|
|
|
Twenty years before the famed 1849 gold rush in
California, thousands of prospectors
flocked into the Cherokee Nation in north Georgia, marking
the true beginning of our
country's first gold rush. Their dramatic story is told
inside the historic 1836 Lumpkin
County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse in Georgia.
Dahlonega prospered with this
mining activity, and a U.S. Branch Mint opened in 1838,
coining more than $6 million
in gold before closing in 1861. The museum's exhibits
include a set of these coins, a nugget
weighing more than five ounces, a large hydraulic cannon and
nozzle used to blast soil from
mountainsides, a film and gift shop. Visitors can also
explore the courthouse features,
including beautiful wooden chapel seats from 1889 and the
judge's chambers. The town of
Dahlonega is a popular destination for gold panning,
shopping and sightseeing.

Arts Festival!
|
|
Mountain laurel and rhododendron are in full
bloom in Dahlonega—and so are this mountain
community’s many arts events. Heating up the arts scene
are gallery showings, theatre productions, new spring
merchandise at the singularly sassy shops on the Square
and festivals that celebrate Dahlonega’s heritage.
Visitors can fill up on these appetizing arts—and still
have room for inventive cuisine at some of the hottest
restaurants in North Georgia. |

Pictures paint a thousand words-
See the work of resident artists Anita Elder, a
contemporary realist, and Beth Brightwell, whose pastel
and acrylic paintings depict her love of music, at the
Buison Gallery. The Olde Cannery Art Center features
the works of area artists working in all media. From May
10—June 29, the Center is hosting a Spring Art Show. At
Bleu Gallery, both an art gallery and working studio
located under the spicy Gabee's Cajun Kitchen, watch
artists at work (and play), creating landscapes,
“peoplescapes” and abstracts in oils and acrylics.
Hummingbird Lane, a bustling 2000 square foot
upstairs art gallery features the works of more than 190
artists, including woodworkers, photographers, painters,
potters, glass workers and more! |
All the world’s a stage-
And the Historic Holly Theatre brings much of that world
to you. Home to one of Georgia's top performing theater
companies, The Holly ignites the Square with smart and
snappy productions: the toe tapping music of the
award-winning Mountain Music and Medicine Show radio
production that captures the flavor of Dahlonega from
its Gold Rush days to the 1950s (on selected dates from
March 1—October 4); The Holly presents Broadway-style
musical extravaganzas year round, with
Aristocats Live On Stage,
June 21-22, presented by the Holly Children’s Theatre; |
