Dahlonega is rich in the culture and charm of Appalachia within its beautifully preserved downtown historic district. The Georgia gateway to the Appalachians is the site of the first U. S. gold rush. Dahlonega is home to The Gold Museum, gold mines and gold panning facilities. Quaint shops around the Square are filled with regional art, antiques, unique jewelry and collectibles.

The newest gold rush in Dahlonega is in the performing and visual arts! Enjoy wonderful exhibitions and concerts in the park or jamming on
the square. Be swept away by Georgia's premier community theatre company at the historic
Holly Theater. Local potters, painters and photographers display their craft in galleries and shops throughout the historic community.

Dahlonega is also the Heart of Georgia's wine country. Tour all the local wineries and downtown tasting rooms, or plan a wedding in their enchanting surroundings. Don't miss the opportunity to
relax and recharge at a local day spa, resort or retreat center. Spend the week or a night at Cavender Creek Cabins and enjoy a relaxing time spent on the back porch viewing our tumbling creek view or pond view.

Gold Panning In Dahlonega

Dahlonega, Georgia is located on top of the largest gold deposits found east of the Mississippi River in the USA. Most of the gold that could be mined economically has been removed from the earth starting in 1828 when gold was first discovered. The earth below Dahlonega contains many tunnels dug out by miners since 1829. You can tour some of these old gold mine tunnels at the Consolidated Gold Mine shown and see a stamp mill in operation as well as other mining equipment at the Crisson Gold Mine.  Twenty years before the 1849 gold rush to California, thousands of gold seekers flocked into the Cherokee Territory of northeast Georgia, beginning the nation's first major gold rush. PLAN YOUR VISIT

Dahlonega's visitors can explore the outdoors and the winding mountain roads by hiking, bicycling, or horseback riding through some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain in Georgia.

After a day of taking in the incredible scenery of the mountains and forest, visitors can then return to their accommodations in Dahlonega to enjoy evening hors d'oeuvres and a glass of Georgia-made wine (there are four world-class wineries in Lumpkin County alone!), enjoy luxurious treatments at any one of the area's spas or health centers, or simply take a spring stroll among the town's especially charming historic streets.

The Dahlonega Commercial District, fanning out from the museum in a series of squares and historic buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dahlonega offers a wonderful diversity of un-crowded shopping opportunities with a litany of elegant shops, intimate boutiques, antique stores, and one-of-a-kind galleries offering local wines, distinctive gifts, clothing, and regional arts and crafts. Most of the shops are on or near the Gold Museum, so visitors can park once and shop all over town.

It's easy to see why this is one of Georgia's most popular state parks. Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning "tumbling waters," is an appropriate name for these 729-foot falls Read More
