Gold Rush Days is a big festival
in a small Georgia town. The
festival, held on the third
weekend in October, October
18-19, 2008, commemorates
Dahlonega's discovery of gold in
1828.
"Gold Rush Days has been voted
one of the Top 20 Events in the
southeast by the Southeast
Tourism Society". according to
the website. Thousands of people
flock to the mountain town to
enjoy the beautiful fall
colors peaking and to
celebrate the 1828 discovery of
gold in Dahlonega.
The mountain festival attracts
about 200,000 people to
Dahlonega, GA. Over 300
art and
craft exhibitors will gather
in the Historic District Public
Square. The popular event is
filled with lively
activities and
fun for the family.
The two day event
features a parade,
fashion show, gold
panning contest, children's
activities, hog calling buck
beard content, liar's contest,
cross-cut saw contest, balloon
throwing contest, pipe
smoking contest, dancing
contest, wheelbarrow race,
gospel singing and the
coronation of the King and
Queen. The festival promises
to have delicious
food available for
visitors. The Georgia Gold Rush hit
Dahlonega in 1828. The
rivers had been mined by
Cherokee Indians and Spanish
explorers as far back as the
1500''s. The "discovery" of
gold in 1828 brought an
influx of miners panning for
gold. There was so much gold
being produced in the region
that the government built a
gold mint in Dahlonega in
1838. Gold production
decreased, but the gold rush
continued until 1849, when
gold was discovered in
California. The miners
headed west to find gold!

Frogtown vineyard
encompasses 32 acres of vineyards on the rolling hills of the
Dahlonega Plateau in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The elevation of
our vineyards extend from 1675 to 1825 feet above sea level. We
believe the contours of our hills represent some of the steepest
slopes of all viticultural areas in the eastern part of the
United States. Our sandy clay loam soil, steep slopes, and
directional aspect of our vineyards, create a most unique
viticultural environment for our grape vines.

A
woman came home to
find her husband in
the kitchen, shaking
frantically with what
looked like a wire
running from his waist
towards the electric
kettle. Intending to
jolt him away from the
deadly current she
whacked him with a
handy plank of wood by
the back door,
breaking his arm in
two places. Until that
moment he had been
happily listening to
his walkman!
Insurance Insanity
* The other car collided with
mine without giving me warning
of its intention.
*I thought my window was down,
but I found it was up when I
put my head through it.
*The guy was all over the
road. I had to swerve several
times before I hit him.
* I had been driving for 40
years when I fell asleep at
the wheel and had an accident.
* The accident was caused by
me waving to the man I hit
last week. *
My car was legally parked as
it backed into another
vehicle.
Olympics Humor
Now that Vancouver has won the chance to host the 2010 Winter Olympics these are some questions people the world over are asking!!!! Believe it or not these questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website (frightening, isn't it!)
Q: Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? (USA)
A: Depends on how much you've been drinking.
Q: I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto-can I follow the Railroad tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only Four thousand miles, take lots of water.
Q: Are there any ATM's (cash machines) in Canada? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax? (UK)
A: What did your last slave die of?
Q: Which direction is North in Canada? (USA)
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.
Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada? (UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.
Q: Do you have perfume in Canada? (Germany)
A: No, WE don't stink.
Q: Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round? (Germany)
A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunter/gathers. Milk is illegal.

Dahlonega
Gold Talk Trivia
Question: Where
did the
expression
“There’s gold in
them thar hills”
actually came
from?
Answer: The
Dahlonega gold
rush. It was in
1849 and,
according to the
Dahlonega Gold
Museum a crowd
had gathered by
the courthouse
as the assayer
of Dahlonega
asked the miners
to stay in here
in Georgia
rather than
rushing out to
California. As
history tells
us, the miners
didn’t listen,
and the
“forty-niners”
flooded
California.
However, the
story goes that
Mark Twain,
hearing the
assayer’s words
second-hand from
a friend, wrote
that famous
version. There’s
no need to go
rushing to
California,
“There’s gold in
them thar
hills.”
