GOLD!! Dahlonega History In (or under) Our Own Backyard
Not many people know it, but our namesake, Cavender Creek and the surrounding land, contributed to the country's first gold rush. We were not aware of the mining activity that took place 100 years ago, but when we broke ground for our new home we made a fantastic discovery! We had unwittingly uncovered the sealed gold mine of Rufus Wood, a miner who in the 1870's, had worked the area hoping to find "the mother lode!" Rufus discovered a rich vein that was sure to lead him to wealth, but he would have to tunnel hundreds of feet into the mountain to follow it. Before he could reach his goal, the mine suffered a major collapse and Rufus Wood saw his dreams literally crushed. Having spent all his money to dig into the mountain he had no choice but to stop his operation. In 1895 Rufus sealed the mine and vowed to return to claim the treasure he left behind. Rufus never returned... A 100 years later we discovered Rufus' mine and learned the history behind it. I have to admit, the attraction to pick up where Rufus left off was pretty strong, but we were able to resist "gold fever" and continued with our original plans. We made a thorough investigation of the remaining tunnel, took some pictures and finally sealed the tunnel for the last(?) time. Catch your own gold fever at either the Dahlonega Gold Museum or Gold Mine Tours.
